These large image etchings were inspired by traditional Australian aboriginal paintings that depict maps of their local physical and natural environment. My maps, however, do not indicate actual physical places, but rather subconscious places passed through momentarily as I put the ink on the plate.
The etchings are printed from photopolymer plates made by painting etching ink directly onto the plates, exposing them to the sun (UV rays), and then, after removing the ink, washing them in water to obtain the etch.

An insightfull post. Will definitely help.

Do you have to use a photo polymer exposure machine, or can you lay the plates out in sun, as it seems you are suggesting. I have been thinking about doing ink-painting type work on my Vandy. These images are beautiful ink quality, much like I would like to accomplish.
I did expose these plates in the sun but you can expose them under a UV lamp. First I exposed the plate with an aquatint screen, then I painted on them with black etching ink and flash oil, and then I exposed them to the sun. I cleaned the ink off with baby oil and then etched them in water.
